Homemade All Natural Washing Soap

For awhile, I had just been putting a little of this and that in the washer with a squirt of Dr. Bronner's to wash clothes. Then it occurred to me that it would be faster and more economical to mix it all up. We wash everything in this. Our clothes, babygirls clothes and diapers.
Sometimes I'll add a few drops of tea tree oil or lavender, but for the most part 1-2tbs of this works wonderfully.

1c Arm and Hammer Super Washing Soda
1/2c Baking Soda
1/2c Borax
1/4c Dr. Bronner's mild liquid castille soap
*2c hot water

Mix the dry ingredients with the water and then add the soap. I use an electric hand mixer. It becomes really fluffy and then firms up after sitting. You wind up with what looks like moist crystals.
Use 1tbs for light loads and 2 for heavy or strongly soiled loads.

*When I posted this originally, I mistakenly put 4c
water. I had made a double batch that day. You can use 4, but if you don't change your other measurements, your finished product will be diluted. In that case, you would use more of it for a load.

  1. Love this! Once everyone is back on their regular schedules (still on fall break over here) I will make it and test it. Can you add essential oils or does that defeat the purpose of the entire thing?

  2. Yes, you can add them right in! I don't because I like to change it up depending on what I'm washing. Tea tree for diapers, Lavender or lemongrass for clothes or sometimes a mix of different ones. Let me know how you like it!
