Over 12 Ways To Use Essential Oils!

essential oils

What is an Essential Oil?
An essential oil is a liquid that is most frequently steam distilled, cold pressed or extracted from the leaves, stems, flowers, bark, roots, or other elements of a plant. Essential oils contain the true essence of the botanical it was derived from and are highly concentrated, so a little goes a long way. EO's offer a myriad of therapeutic, psychological and physical benefits and are great for use in aromatherapy and skin applications when diluted.

The great thing about essential oils is that you can clean, disinfect and heal naturally without any toxins!

I use essential oils everyday in my home for everything from natural remedies and therapies to cleaning and sanitizing. I also like to use them to add natural fragrance to my homemade:

Here are some other ways I use these amazing Essential Oils!

Illness:
At the first sign of colds or flu or even just when we have been around other sick people, I do the following to help keep the littles from getting sick. Of course a healthy immune system from a healthy diet and lifestyle is the first way to combat illness!

*Foot, Chest and Back Rub. Germ Destroyer diluted with sweet almond or coconut oil. I massage onto the bottom of their feet, their back and chest. Cover feet with socks. I do this right after baths and before bed. Peppermint eo is good for lowering high fever, so I add this to the mix, if we are battling a fever. You can pre-mix eo's into carrier oil to have on hand and be sure of how much you use or just mix as you go. I pour a quarter sized amount in my hand per child and follow with 2 drops of the germ destroyer. I rub together and immediately massage into their feet. I rub any left on their chest and back.

*Humidifier and/or Diffusing. I use a few drops of Germ Destroyer
at bedtime and anytime during the day, I start to notice any symptoms. Follow the instructions on your particular machine for how much eo to add.

Cleaning:
Note: These are oils, so be sure the surface that you are using it on, can withstand diluted essential oils. I've never measured any of these, so they're estimates.

*Home Disinfectant. I use Tea Tree, Lavender and Lemon diluted in water to sanitize all areas of the house. I fill a spray bottle with water and add about 8 drops of each oil. Spray on the surface that needs cleaning and sanitizing, then wipe away. If it's a tough to sanitize area, spray on and let air dry.

*Carpet Cleaner and Flea Remover. Poke holes in the lid of an old jar. Add about 2c baking soda, 1c diatomaceous earth (optional. this works well for killing fleas and other pests found on and around pets) and 10 drops each of Eucalyptus radiata, Tea Tree and Sweet Orange. Sprinkle liberally on carpets and on pet bedding. Let sit for at least 1hr. I leave it on overnight. Vacuum up carpets and shake of excess from pet bedding.

Wellness:
There are so many ways that you can use essential oils in your daily life. It's great to keep an essential oils kit on hand, so that you are ready when you need them. If you have any questions on which ones to start with or want further recommendations. Let me know below!

*Bath Time. Every time my children bathe, I add a couple of drops of tea tree and lavender to the water. They bathe together and for 1/2 full tub, I add about 5 drops lavender and 3 drops tea tree. This has been the routine since they were about 1 yr old. During times when they really need calming or times of illness, I will also add blue chamomile. It makes such a difference in the occurrence of them getting ill and helps get them down for the night.

*Hand Sanitizer. I keep a small spray bottle of witch hazel with lavender and tea tree in my bag at all times. We spray this on our hands and on any surfaces that need sanitizing while we're out. The ratio I use is 20 drops to every 4oz.
