How To Comb Out Locs / K's 5 Year Loc Journey

K made the decision to loc her hair when she was 4 years old.
She was never into getting her hair done. So much so, that it would take us days to complete a washing, conditioning, detangling session.

I figured their was not much sense in fighting about hair weekly. It's just hair and it's hers, so we discussed it and came up with 3 options.

#1- Cut it very short, so there would be little maintenance. Just washing, conditioning as needed and a moisture spritz daily.
#2- Loc it up. I explained what that meant and how "permanent" it was.
#3- Keep on as we had been.

This was not really an option, but I thought if she wanted to keep her hair as is, she would know that maintenance sessions were necessary and would be able to deal with it better.

She chose the second option and loved having locs from the very beginning. She grew them for 5 years and then started tossing around the idea of taking them out.

We had always said that we would cut them when and if she ever decided she didn't want them any longer. However, now that she was 9 years old, she was very curious about her loose hair and really didn't want to cut off her length. I understood of course, because she was very young when she made the decision, so I agreed to take them down.
